Erectile Dysfunction and Fertility

Erectile dysfunction is difficulty getting or maintaining an erection sufficient for sexual activity. It is common and can have many possible causes, including cardiovascular, hormonal, neurological, medication-related, and psychological factors.

This page explains how erectile dysfunction may affect attempts to conceive, factors that may contribute to it, when evaluation may be appropriate, and fertility options when sexual function makes conception more difficult.

Summary:
  • Erectile dysfunction is difficulty getting or maintaining an erection sufficient for sexual activity.
  • It can have vascular, hormonal, neurological, medication-related, psychological, or other causes.
  • Erectile dysfunction does not necessarily affect sperm quality but can make conception through intercourse more difficult.
  • Evaluation may include medical history, hormone testing, and assessment of overall reproductive health.
  • Fertility options depend on sperm health, sexual function, and the reproductive goals of the individual or couple.
  • This page explains erectile dysfunction, fertility considerations, evaluation, and possible treatment options.

What Is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction is persistent difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection sufficient for sexual activity. Occasional difficulty with erections is common and does not necessarily indicate a reproductive health problem.

Erectile function and sperm production are separate, so erectile dysfunction does not automatically mean sperm count or quality is abnormal.

What Causes Erectile Dysfunction?

Possible causes include vascular disease, diabetes, neurological conditions, hormonal abnormalities, medications, prior pelvic treatment, stress, anxiety, and other physical or psychological factors.

Erectile Dysfunction & Fertility

Erectile dysfunction can make conception through intercourse more difficult when semen cannot reliably be deposited in the reproductive tract. Semen analysis can help determine whether sperm production and quality are otherwise healthy. Ejaculation problems may also affect sperm delivery but represent a separate reproductive concern.

When Erectile Dysfunction Should Be Evaluated

Persistent or recurrent erectile dysfunction should be discussed with a healthcare provider, particularly when it represents a change from previous sexual function or occurs alongside low libido. Earlier fertility evaluation may be appropriate when erectile dysfunction is preventing intercourse during the fertile window.

How Erectile Dysfunction Is Evaluated

Evaluation may include medical and sexual history, medication review, physical examination, hormone testing, and assessment for cardiovascular or metabolic factors. When pregnancy is desired, semen analysis and reproductive urology evaluation may also be recommended.

Common Erectile Dysfunction Questions

Does erectile dysfunction mean low sperm count?
No. Erectile function and sperm production are separate aspects of reproductive health.

Can erectile dysfunction make it harder to get pregnant?
It can make conception through intercourse more difficult when it prevents semen from being deposited in the reproductive tract.

Should erectile dysfunction be evaluated during fertility testing?
Persistent erectile dysfunction should be evaluated, and semen analysis may be recommended when pregnancy is desired.

When to Seek Care

The information on this page is intended for general education and is not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Erectile dysfunction can have many causes and does not necessarily indicate a fertility problem. Persistent, recurrent, or concerning changes in erectile function deserve evaluation by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
