Luteinizing hormone (LH) plays an important role in ovulation and reproductive function. LH testing may be used to evaluate ovulation or hormone patterns and is generally interpreted alongside cycle timing and other fertility findings.
What Is Luteinizing Hormone (LH)?
Luteinizing hormone, commonly called LH, is a reproductive hormone produced by the pituitary gland. It plays an important role in the menstrual cycle and helps trigger the release of an egg from a mature ovarian follicle.
LH levels change throughout the cycle. A rise in LH, often called the LH surge, typically occurs before ovulation. Measuring LH can therefore provide information about ovulatory timing or broader reproductive hormone patterns, depending on why the test is being performed.
LH Testing at Home vs. Clinical Testing
At-home ovulation predictor kits typically detect an increase in LH in urine to help estimate when ovulation may be approaching. Clinical LH testing generally uses a blood sample and may be interpreted alongside other hormone levels, ultrasound findings and menstrual-cycle information. The two approaches can serve different purposes and should not be considered interchangeable in every fertility evaluation.
Why Is LH Tested for Fertility?
LH testing may be used to provide information about ovulation and reproductive hormone function. Because LH changes throughout the menstrual cycle, the reason for testing and timing of the measurement are important when interpreting a result.
Identifying the LH Surge
A rise in LH precedes ovulation and can be used to estimate when ovulation is approaching. This is the principle behind many at-home ovulation predictor kits and may also be relevant during clinically monitored cycles.
Evaluating Hormone Patterns
In a clinical fertility evaluation, LH may be considered alongside FSH, estradiol, menstrual patterns and other findings. An isolated LH result generally does not establish whether someone is fertile or identify the cause of a fertility concern.

How Does LH Relate to Ovulation?
LH plays a central role in triggering ovulation. As a follicle matures, changing hormone signals eventually produce a rapid rise in LH known as the LH surge. Ovulation typically follows this surge.
Using LH to Estimate Ovulation
At-home ovulation predictor kits detect rising LH in urine and can help identify the fertile window. A positive result suggests that ovulation may be approaching, but it does not directly confirm that an egg was ultimately released.
LH During Fertility Treatment
During monitored treatment cycles, physicians may use hormone testing and ultrasound to assess follicle development and ovulatory timing. This provides more clinical information than an LH measurement alone.
When confirmation of ovulation is important, progesterone testing, ultrasound or other clinical information may be considered in addition to LH.
