Ultrasound Monitoring During Fertility Treatment

Ultrasound monitoring during fertility treatment

Ultrasound monitoring allows your fertility team to follow follicle growth and the uterine lining as a treatment cycle progresses.

Summary:

Ultrasound monitoring allows fertility specialists to follow follicle development and changes in the uterine lining during a treatment cycle. Findings are considered alongside hormone levels and treatment response to help guide cycle management.

What Is Fertility Ultrasound Monitoring?

Ultrasound monitoring uses transvaginal ultrasound to follow changes in the ovaries and uterine lining during a fertility treatment cycle. It allows the fertility team to observe follicle growth and endometrial development as the cycle progresses.

Monitoring may be used during ovulation induction, IUI, egg freezing, IVF and other treatment cycles. Ultrasound findings are often considered alongside hormone levels and medication response to help guide treatment decisions.

Why Is Monitoring Repeated During a Treatment Cycle?

Follicles and the uterine lining change throughout a treatment cycle, and patients can respond differently to fertility medications. Repeated monitoring gives the clinical team updated information that can help determine medication adjustments, treatment timing and when a cycle is ready for its next step.

What Does Ultrasound Monitoring Measure?

During a monitored fertility cycle, transvaginal ultrasound provides real-time information about changes in the ovaries and uterine lining.

Follicle Growth

Follicles are fluid-filled structures in the ovaries that contain developing eggs. Ultrasound allows the fertility team to count and measure growing follicles as the ovaries respond during a treatment cycle.

Endometrial Lining

Ultrasound can also measure the thickness and appearance of the endometrium, the tissue lining the inside of the uterus. These findings may be considered when planning treatment timing or embryo transfer.

Overall Cycle Response

Ultrasound findings are often interpreted alongside hormone levels and medication response. Together, this information helps the clinical team assess how the cycle is progressing and determine whether treatment adjustments may be appropriate.

When Is Ultrasound Used During Fertility Treatment?

Ultrasound monitoring may be used at several points during fertility treatment, with the frequency determined by the type of cycle and how the patient responds.

Ovulation Induction and IUI

During medicated ovulation induction or IUI cycles, ultrasound can track follicle development and help the fertility team determine when follicles are approaching maturity.

IVF and Egg Freezing

During ovarian stimulation for IVF or egg freezing, ultrasound is performed repeatedly to monitor the number and size of developing follicles. These findings help physicians assess response to medication and determine when eggs may be ready for retrieval.

Embryo Transfer Preparation

Ultrasound may also be used during preparation for embryo transfer to evaluate the endometrial lining and help guide treatment timing. The monitoring schedule is individualized based on the treatment protocol and response.
