Acne and Fertility

Acne is extremely common and can be influenced by hormones, genetics, medications, skin characteristics, and other factors. In some people, persistent or new acne occurs alongside other signs of increased androgen activity or changes in ovulation.

What Is Acne?

Acne develops when hair follicles become blocked and inflamed and can be influenced by hormones, genetics, skin characteristics, medications, and other factors. Acne is common and does not by itself indicate a fertility problem.

What Causes Acne?

Androgens can increase oil production and contribute to acne. In some people, acne occurs as part of a broader hormonal pattern such as PCOS, particularly when accompanied by irregular periods or excess facial hair.

Acne itself does not affect fertility. Its reproductive relevance depends on whether an underlying hormonal condition is also disrupting ovulation. Many people with acne have completely normal reproductive hormone function.
