What Is Pelvic Pain?
Pelvic pain is discomfort in the lower abdomen or pelvis that may be temporary, recurrent, or persistent. It can arise from reproductive organs as well as the urinary, gastrointestinal, or musculoskeletal systems.
Pelvic pain is a symptom rather than a fertility diagnosis.
What Causes Pelvic Pain?
Possible reproductive causes include endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids, adenomyosis, pelvic infection, and other gynecologic conditions. Pelvic floor, gastrointestinal, urinary, and musculoskeletal conditions can cause similar symptoms.

How Pelvic Pain Is Evaluated
Evaluation may include medical and menstrual history, pelvic examination, pregnancy testing when appropriate, and pelvic ultrasound. Additional testing is guided by symptoms and whether a reproductive, urinary, gastrointestinal, or other cause is suspected.
