Why Is Testing Recommended Before IVF?

Testing before in vitro fertilization (IVF) gives your fertility team information that can help individualize treatment and identify factors that may be relevant before a cycle begins. The evaluation typically considers ovarian function, reproductive anatomy, sperm-related factors and overall medical and reproductive history.

Results may help physicians estimate expected ovarian response, select an initial medication strategy and determine whether additional evaluation of the uterus, sperm or other reproductive factors is appropriate. Some testing may also be required before treatment for medical, laboratory or regulatory reasons.

Is Pre-IVF Testing the Same for Everyone?

No. The appropriate evaluation depends on age, reproductive history, prior fertility treatment, use of donor eggs or sperm, plans for embryo genetic testing and other individual factors. Some patients may already have recent results that can be used, while others may need additional or updated testing before starting IVF.

What Tests May Be Recommended Before IVF?

Pre-IVF testing helps physicians understand factors that may influence ovarian stimulation, fertilization, embryo development or embryo transfer.

Ovarian Reserve Assessment

AMH, antral follicle count and other ovarian reserve findings can help estimate expected response to stimulation and inform medication planning.

Ultrasound and Uterine Evaluation

Ultrasound provides information about the ovaries and uterus. Depending on history and previous testing, additional evaluation of the uterine cavity may be recommended before embryo transfer.

Semen Analysis

When sperm is part of the treatment plan, semen analysis helps evaluate sperm characteristics and may inform laboratory and fertilization planning.

Additional Pre-IVF Testing

Testing may also include infectious disease screening, genetic carrier screening or other laboratory evaluations depending on individual circumstances and treatment plans.

How Test Results Inform IVF Treatment Planning

Pre-IVF testing gives the fertility team information that can be used to individualize the treatment plan rather than approaching every IVF cycle in the same way.
