Reproductive History
Your reproductive history can provide important clues about your fertility—and help your care team determine what to investigate next.
Whether you’ve been trying to conceive without success, experienced pregnancy loss, undergone unsuccessful fertility treatment, or encountered challenges with embryo implantation, your previous experiences can provide important context for a more personalized approach to care.
At Spring Fertility, we look at the full picture: where you are today, what you’ve experienced so far, and what may help you move closer to your family-building or fertility preservation goals.
- Your reproductive history can provide important information about your fertility and help your physician determine what to investigate next.
- It can include how long you have been trying to conceive, previous pregnancies, pregnancy loss, embryo implantation experiences, and previous fertility treatment.
- Difficulty getting pregnant and difficulty staying pregnant can raise different clinical questions and may lead to different evaluations.
- Previous IUI or IVF cycles can provide information about treatment response, fertilization, embryo development and implantation.
- An unsuccessful pregnancy or fertility treatment does not necessarily predict what will happen next.
- At Spring Fertility, your physician considers your reproductive history alongside fertility testing, age, medical history, and family-building or fertility preservation goals to develop an individualized path forward.
When Your Fertility Journey Hasn’t Gone as Expected
There is no single path that brings patients to a fertility specialist. Some people come to us after months of trying to conceive. Others have become pregnant but experienced one or more losses. Some have already undergone IUI or IVF without the outcome they hoped for.
Understanding those experiences—and looking for patterns within them—can help your physician determine whether additional evaluation, a different treatment strategy or another approach may be appropriate.
Difficulty Getting Pregnant
If you have been trying to conceive without success, your physician may evaluate factors including ovulation, ovarian reserve, fallopian tube health, uterine anatomy, sperm health, age and other aspects of your reproductive history.

Difficulty Staying Pregnant
Becoming pregnant is only one part of the reproductive process. If you have experienced repeated early losses or difficulty maintaining a pregnancy, your physician may recommend evaluation based on the timing and circumstances of those pregnancies.

Implantation Challenges
When an embryo does not implant—or implantation repeatedly does not lead to an ongoing pregnancy—there may be several factors to consider. Your physician can review the embryos transferred, uterine environment, treatment protocols, genetic information when available and your broader reproductive history to determine what may be worth investigating.

When Fertility Treatment Hasn’t Worked
An unsuccessful IUI or IVF cycle can provide information that helps guide the next treatment decision. Rather than viewing each cycle in isolation, your physician can consider how you responded to medications, fertilization and embryo development, transfer history, sperm factors and other clinical information to determine whether the approach should change.

What Can Your Reproductive History Tell Your Fertility Specialist?
Your reproductive history provides important context for understanding your fertility, but it is not a diagnosis on its own. Your physician may consider how long you have been trying to conceive, whether conception has occurred before, the timing of previous pregnancy losses, how you responded to fertility medications, fertilization and embryo development during IVF, and what happened after previous embryo transfers.
That history is interpreted alongside fertility testing and other clinical information. Depending on your circumstances, your care team may recommend additional evaluation of ovarian reserve, ovulation, the uterus and fallopian tubes, sperm factors, genetic information, or other areas that may help clarify what is worth investigating further.
The goal is to understand your experience as part of the full clinical picture—not to assume that a previous fertility challenge has a single explanation. Even when prior treatment or pregnancy loss has not provided a clear answer, your history can help your physician determine what questions to ask next and how to approach your care thoughtfully.

How Your Reproductive History Can Inform What Comes Next
Previous fertility challenges do not necessarily determine what will happen next.
At Spring Fertility, our goal is to understand what your reproductive history can teach us, identify factors that may be contributing to your experience and develop a treatment strategy around your individual circumstances and goals.
Depending on your history, that may include additional evaluation for reproductive conditions, changes to an IUI or IVF treatment plan, review of previous IVF results, evaluation of embryos or the uterine environment, male fertility testing, genetic counseling when appropriate or other individualized recommendations.
The objective is not simply to repeat what has already been tried. It is to use what we have learned from your reproductive history to make thoughtful decisions about the path forward.
For patients who have already undergone IVF, our Understanding IVF Results resource explains how information from different stages of an IVF cycle may help inform future treatment decisions.
