What Is Abnormal Uterine Bleeding?

Abnormal uterine bleeding refers to menstrual or vaginal bleeding that differs from a person’s usual pattern in timing, frequency, duration, or amount. It can include unusually heavy periods, bleeding between periods, or cycles that occur more or less frequently than expected.

Abnormal bleeding is a symptom rather than a diagnosis and does not necessarily indicate a fertility problem.

What Causes Abnormal Uterine Bleeding?

Possible causes include irregular ovulation, hormonal changes, uterine fibroids, endometrial polyps, adenomyosis, thyroid disorders, medications, bleeding disorders, and pregnancy-related changes. Identifying the bleeding pattern and any accompanying symptoms can help guide evaluation.

When Abnormal Uterine Bleeding Should Be Evaluated

Very heavy bleeding associated with dizziness, fainting, severe pain, or possible pregnancy may require more immediate medical attention.

How Abnormal Uterine Bleeding Is Evaluated

Evaluation may include menstrual and medical history, pregnancy testing when appropriate, blood or hormone testing, pelvic ultrasound, or assessment of the uterine cavity. When fertility is a concern, testing may also evaluate ovulation, ovarian reserve, fallopian tubes, and sperm health when applicable.
