What Is Breast Discharge?
Breast or nipple discharge is fluid released from the nipple outside of breastfeeding. It can have several possible causes, and the appearance, timing, and whether discharge comes from one or both breasts can help guide evaluation.
What Causes Breast Discharge?
Possible causes include pregnancy, breastfeeding, breast stimulation, medications, breast conditions, and elevated prolactin. Because some causes are unrelated to reproductive hormones, breast discharge should not automatically be interpreted as a fertility symptom.
